Engineering institute advocates mentorship for varsity students | The Guardian Nigeria News

The Automotive and Locomotive Engineers Institute (AutoEl), a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, has advised engineers to provide mentorship programmes for young practitioners, especially in the automotive field.

National Chairman of AutoEI, Abubakar Jumare, stated this during a public lecture and inauguration of new student members held at Elizade University, Ondo State.

He said there is need to initiate students into the technicalities of automotive engineering. About 48 students of the university were admitted into the AutoEI Students’ Forum at the ceremony.

The AutoEl Chairman urged lecturers and management to invest on the students by making steady efforts to groom and mentor them, as well as preparing them for the challenges ahead.

“I challenge the lecturers of the Faculty and NSE Akure Branch Chairman to form a chapter of AutoEI to mentor the younger ones,” Jumare said.

Speaking on “Towards Producing Competent and Successful Automotive Engineers,” he said the choice of the topic was deliberate to be at par with the inauguration of the students’ chapter.

“It is my utmost belief that the lecture will motivate students to understand that automotive engineering is a specialisation that is worth taken as a career.  This is due to the sophistication of modern vehicles, which require deep knowledge of auto-tronics and vehicle dynamics. As such, graduates of automotive engineering will have a great role to play in the Nigeria’s auto industry.”

He also congratulated the university for its giant strides and efforts to take students through the path of professionalism, saying Elizade University was the first private university to have a students’ chapter inaugurated in the country.

He added that the institute would give professional support and maintain accreditation status of all its programmes towards obtaining approval to start postgraduate programmes.

The Vice Chancellor, Elizade University, Prof. Olukayode Amund, charged the newly inaugurated students to be more skillful and competent as successful engineers.
