SALT SPRINGS — A motorcyclist was killed Saturday afternoon when he was ejected off his bike and landed in the middle of State Road 40 East several miles from State Road 19.
According to Florida Highway Patrol troopers on scene, witnesses reported that the rider and at least one other motorcyclist were speeding westbound on SR 40 when the victim failed to negotiate a right curve and lost control.
Troopers were told that the bike briefly entered the eastbound lane, then struck the back of a boat trailer. The rider, whose name was not provided, was thrown from the bike.
Troopers said the rider wound up in the roadway while his motorcycle, an older model Suzuki, slid into the grassy median.
Marion County Fire Rescue spokesman James Lucas said his agency was assigned the call at 4:04 p.m. and arrived on scene at 4:20 p.m. The victim was pronounced deceased at 4:23.
Family and friends of the rider who showed up at the scene declined comment. Although troopers did not release the victim’s name, they said he was 30, and from Ocala. Authorities said the victim was riding with a friend.
Marion County sheriff’s deputies rerouted traffic in both directions so troopers could interview witnesses, investigate the scene, and wait for the Medical Examiner’s Office officials and a tow truck.
The roadway was opened shortly after 9 p.m., troopers said.
The death was the fourth traffic fatality within the the past 10 days. Three of the four people killed had been on motorcycles.
